Hi, Misha! Thank you for what you wrote. Thank you...what do you think about Ukraine? [Host dad] and I are ok, but we don't know what awaits us in the future. Now our metro system doesn't work and there are bread shortages. Many people cannot go to work. People are fighting in Maidan. [Host brother] is studying in England. I am so glad he is there...
From Katya:
The basic news of what have happened during yesterday and this night. To be short: on the West the representatives of the pro government left their posts, like administration office, militia and security service. In the centre - clashes between protests and militia with titushki [undercover police/security service members posing as thugs to intimidate and carry out the illegal desires of the government]. South and East - small protests with a lot of beaten people. A girl was shouted during protest in Khmelnitsk region.
From Maidan News Ukraine:
Review of developments in the region yesterday:
UKRAINE IN GENERAL:
Across Ukraine, opposition was abused. There are reports of several Regional State Administrators (RSA) being captured as the regional centers and rural communities intensified. All over Ukraine, there are notices of resignation from officials and deputies from the Party of Regions [Russian-leaning party supporting President Yanukovych].
WEST:
In the west, the old regime is virtually eliminated, but no one has taken their place. Some steps in this direction were taken in L'Viv and in Zakarpattia, where some Deputy Ministers of Parliament met to form a new executive body. Government administrative buildings have been seized and security forces have left the area. Siloviki [government security forces] are trying to prevent trains from moving towards Kyiv.
CENTRAL UKRAINE:
If security forces "surrendered" in the West, they are resisting in Central Ukraine: clashes have occurred in Sumy, Poltava, Khmelnitsky (one killed), and Vinnytsia. In Zhytomyr, the opposition has captured RSA and Internal Affairs officials; in Poltava, police repelled the assault, but the RSA is blocked. Protestors block traffic on main streets. In some areas, security forces and soldiers block traffic [not sure how to translate the rest]
SOUTH and EAST:
Relatively few rallies in oblasts (states). Security forces are in Kharkiv and Zaporozhia (unlike in Odessa before yesterday). Clashes with security forces in Odessa. In the center of the southeast, the offices of political parties - both government and opposition - have been set on fire. Security reinforcements were sent to Kyiv.
